SOTM Scholarship Program

The OpenStreetMap Foundation is excited to provide full travel and accomodations costs for 15 mappers to attend State of the Map. We sought nominations of people from places where costs would prohibit attendance, especially developing countries and places that are “interesting” geopolitically. The scholarships will provide an opportunity for these leaders of nascent OSM communities to network, learn, and find the inspirations and support to take OSM to the next level.

From 49 nominations, in 24 countries, we had the difficult task of choosing 15 recipients.

We are welcoming the following mappers in Girona:

  • Anas Maraqa from Palestinian West Bank (visa denied by the German embassy in Tblisi, Georgia)
  • Eugene Usvitsky from Russia (visa denied by the Spanish embassy in Moscow)
  • Evgheni Dereveanchin from Moldova
  • Javier Carranza Torres from Cascales, Ecuador
  • Jorge Luis Batista Echevarría from Havana, Cuba (visa denied by the Spanish embassy in Havana)
  • Maria Antonieta Giannarelli from Montevideo, Uruguay
  • Metasebia Demissie from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (visa denied by the Spanish embassy in Addis Ababa)
  • Narcisse Mbunzama Lokwa from Kinshasa, The Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Okorukwu Williams from Abuja, Nigeria (visa denied by the Spanish embassy in Lagos)
  • Regynnah Awino from Nairobi, Kenya (visa denied by the Spanish embassy in Nairobi)
  • Robert Coup from New Zealand
  • Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed from Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • Thanh Le Viet from Hanoi, Vietnam
  • Vitor George from São Paulo, Brazil
  • Guensmork Alcin from Port-au-Prince, Haiti (visa denied by the French embassy in Port-au-Prince)

Many thanks go to the Open Society Institute (http://www.soros.org/) for helping to make this happen.

Concert Contest on Saturday

As proven on previous SOTM’s mappers can actually be pretty creative. This year we decided to put up a song contest and we have received quite a few submissions. Ranging from own work to general ideas to Tenacious D. covers we can be sure this contest will ROCK!

Some songs need a bit of work and/or performers so please check out the the wiki.

Spot Image to sponsor State of the Map 2010

Spot Image is a provider of added-value satellite imagery and geospatial services. Starting as the commercial operator of the SPOT satellites, Spot Image is now a supplier of imagery from a range of other optical and radar Earth-imaging satellites.

Spot Image supports the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters (http://www.disasterscharter.org/) by its capacity and daily revisit capability to acquire imagery of any point on Earth. In addition, the rich global archive of SPOT imagery compiled since 1986, now containing nearly 20 million images, provides pre-disaster images of a region of interest for comparative analysis and damage assessment. Spot Image also participate in SAFER (Services and Applications For Emergency Response : http://www.emergencyresponse.eu/ ) which is a large European project funded in the frame of the GMES initiative (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security).

When the case of global warming was so widely made in 2006, Spot Image could not do but decide to engage in action to tackle it: no other industry is better placed than Earth Observation to support projects and action fighting Climate Change. Planet Action (http://www.planet-action.org/) was launched in 2007 by Spot Image, leading supplier of satellite imagery and geo-information, joined by ESRI, leading GIS technologies provider as co-founder. Planet Action objectives are to support local projects acting on Climate Change-related issues by providing geographic information and technology to NGOs, universities, research centers…

Program Announced for the State of the Map 2010

The long awaited agenda for State of the Map 2010 is now available!

The successful Pro Users’ Day  will also kick off  the first day of State of the Map in Girona. Like SOTM 2009 in Amsterdam, it will primarily focus on emerging professional users of OpenStreetMap.  We have seen a huge increase in the professional adoption of OpenStreetMap.  The State of the Map will feature presentations from Skobbler, 1 Spatial Nutiteq and CloudMade – some of the most innovative companies who are pioneering the commercial use of OpenStreetMap data.

Saturday and Sunday will be more OSM community oriented. Saturday launches the 4th Annual SOTM conference we all know and love and it’s all about our community. The day is split into two tracks, featuring Community, Technical, Quality and Validation and back by popular demand, the OSI Scholarship Lightning talks!

Sunday isn’t a day of rest at SOTM! The day features talks on Imports, discussions on OSM Foundation, Tools, Maps, Humanitarian works and plenty of time for fun, friends and fantastic auction action!
Fantastic three day tickets which include lunch, refreshments and the famous t-shirts start at €90 for OSM community and Foundation members. Tickets are going fast – don’t wait to register!

We have received 48 complete applications for a SOTM 2010 scholarship, which is 13 more than last year! Unfortunately, there are still only 15 places to give…

At the moment, we are very busy with reviewing all the applications, in order to create the list of 15 happy applicants, that will receive a travel scholarship for attending the SOTM 2010.
This list will be available before the 21st of May, and will also be posted on this site.
Each of the nominees will receive an email with the verdict before the list is published.

Thank you for your patience, and good luck to you all!!!

Kind Regards,
